The Polish Center for Holocaust Research - Request

Dear Sir or Madam,

The Polish Center for Holocaust Research has started a research project about the Jewish property lost or stolen during the WWII. It would be very helpful if you could answer the following questions:

  • Where did your family live?
  • Do you know what has happened to the movable property that belonged to your family, during or after the War?
    I am especially interested in:
    • Furniture, carpets, household goods
    • Art (paintings, drawings, sculptures etc.)
    • Books
    • Religious artifacts
    • Dishes, porcelain, pots
    • Bed linen, table linen,
    • Clothes, coats, fur
    • Jewelry, valuables
    • Family keepsakes (pictures, albums, certificates, documents)
    • Other movable property
  • Were those things:
    • Taken/confiscated by the Nazis?
    • Hidden (have they been discovered after the War or not?)?
    • Sold, donated?
    • Given to someone for safekeeping (to whom? Was there an agreement or a contract?)
      • Have they been returned or recovered?
      • Do you know about the possible appropriation of those things? About any difficulties with recovering them?

Please, feel free to give me your suggestions and comments, all of them will be deeply appreciated. I would be very grateful for your response, each, even the smallest, single piece of information, even incomplete or partial, is very important for me.

I would also like to ask you to give me the permission to quote your responses in the scientific work (if you wish it could be anonymously of course).

Thank you very much!
Professor Barbara Engelking, Head of the Polish Center for Holocaust Research
